Naveen Poonai's primary research focus is pain management for children in the acute care setting, specifically procedure-related pain, abdominal pain, and musculoskeletal pain. His work seeks to identify barriers for managing pain from both the caregiver and clinician's perspective.
He is also involved in developing novel approaches for the provision of analgesia to children both in the emergency department and following discharge. These include therapeutics and educational tools for caregivers.

Naveen Poonai obtained his medical degree from the University of Toronto and completed his residency training in paediatrics at Western University.
He remained at Western to complete his fellowship training in paediatric emergency medicine. He also completed his Masters degree in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University.
