What if I am delayed in completing my pre-placement requirements?
It is important to notify your school and Student Affairs as soon as possible if you anticipate a delay. This enables us to give your preceptor and their leader advanced notice of a potential delay and to negotiate a new start date.
What do I do if I am injured as a student on placement at St. Joseph’s.
Notify your preceptor and obtain first aid (if needed) immediately. Your preceptor has access to submit a Workplace Occurrence Reporting System (WORS) submission so your experience can be fully reviewed by the leader of the area and our Occupational Health & Safety Services (OH&SS) team so they can assess and mitigate any hazards that may have contributed to your injury. The preceptor will also notify the leader separately that a WORS is being completed. While your first aid/treatment of any injury comes first, it is also important to notify (or for your preceptor to notify) Student Affairs and the Fieldwork Coordinator of your academic program.
Am I insured if injured during a student placement?
The Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development has streamlined the WSIB claims process for students completing unpaid work placements in funding eligible Ministry approved programs through Colleges and Universities.
Under the WSIB Claims process, Training Agencies are:
Required to have in each student file, a declaration signed by the student indicating that s/he understands that s/he has WSIB coverage while on unpaid work placements.
Required to provide a letter to Placement Employers indicating that:
Placement Employers and Training Agencies are not required to complete and sign the online Postsecondary Student Unpaid Work Placement Workplace Insurance Claim Form for each student in order to secure WSIB coverage;
All WSIB procedures must be followed in the event of an injury/disease; and
Training Agencies will keep a signed original of the placement letter on file and ensure that Placement Employers have a copy.
Required to notify the Placement Employer whenever there are any changes to the work placement.
Who notifies students if they have been successful in securing a placement opportunity?
Schools will notify students directly if they have been successful in securing a placement opportunity at St. Joseph's.
Do students need to have Tuberculosis (TB) tests if they have the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccine?
TB requirements:
You are required to have a baseline two-step TST regardless of Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) unless you have: documented results of a prior two-step test which can include: two individual skin tests done at least one week apart*.
A single step is required if the last of the 2nd step was more than 12 months ago, or if there are indications of travel to an area known for high levels of TB or an exposure to someone known or suspected of having TB or symptoms of TB. .
*(The two-step TB skin test is normally given as a series of two single TB skin tests repeated between 1-4 weeks apart. However, two individual TB skin tests performed 4-52 weeks apart are also considered an acceptable “two-step TB skin test” - Canadian Thoracic Society & the Public Health Agency of Canada, 2013.)
7. Is the influenza vaccine a requirement for placement? What happens if a student declines the influenza vaccination?
Influenza vaccination is strongly encouraged and is an important measure in protecting patients from the spread of influenza. If a student declines the influenza vaccination, the school needs to notify Student Affairs so that both the school and student are provided with the influenza policy and information regarding next steps and protocol. If there is an outbreak in the hospital, the student will be considered unfit for placement and his/her placement hours could be jeopardized.
Where do I find information on parking options and rates?
