Enriching the community
For Lisa Walters, community involvement is a way of life. As a family lawyer, her role is to help people – parents, children and families, and often that can lead to stressful and intense situations.
She says that giving back as a volunteer means she can enrich the lives of people in the community and at the same time create more balance in her day-to-day life.
Initially, Lisa was inspired by her aunt who was supported by a non-profit organization focused on people living with developmental disabilities.
Lisa soon got involved with Community Living London, eventually becoming a board member and chair, as well as the chair of their annual event. Today, she is the vice chair of St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation’s board and she volunteers with Community Living London, is a board member with Creative Teams Solutions and assists in coaching youth baseball.
Lisa is also a committed donor. Recently, she made a gift of life insurance in support of the care provided at St. Joseph’s.
“It’s not lost on me how lucky we are to have the amazing health care system that we have in London. I am a grateful St. Joseph’s patient and I’ve witnessed the amazing human interactions between patients and care providers. I feel a responsibility to give back.”
When considering their giving, Lisa and her partner knew they wanted to make a significant impact. With a young family, however, they weren’t in the position to make an outright cash donation at the level they wanted. So, they chose to make a gift of life insurance – knowing that eventually the gift would make the difference they envisioned.
Along the way, she was surprised at how straightforward the process was to make the gift. After talking with a life insurance advisor who shopped around for options, Lisa quickly found a product that she knew would work and she finalized the donation.
“We are so blessed to have a hospital of this caliber in our community –it was important to us that we are giving to support it for years to come.”
