St. Joseph’s Project SEARCH graduates celebrate success

London Ontario – Meghan Jackson was once hesitant to ride the bus and unsure about her future after high school. After completing St. Joseph’s Project SEARCH program, she now confidently navigates her travels to her new part-time job at St. Joseph’s Health Care London’s Parkwood Institute.

"I've done so many things I never thought I would feel comfortable doing before," says Meghan.

Project SEARCH is a 10-month internship program aimed at helping youth with intellectual disabilities find meaningful employment through internships to prepare young adults for the workforce. St. Joseph’s, in collaboration with Thames Valley District School Board and Hutton House, serves as a host organization for the program.

Meghan is one of six Project SEARCH interns who will graduate on June 25 during a special ceremony at Parkwood Institute.

Media are invited to speak with Meghan and other graduates in a heartwarming and inspiring graduation ceremony honoring St. Joseph’s six Project SEARCH interns.

What: Project SEARCH graduation

When: June 25, from 2 to 3:30 pm

Where: St. Joseph’s Parkwood Institute Main Building, Main Auditorium, Room B2-106

“The students interning at St. Joseph’s use this time to gain skills needed for employment after graduation,” explains Susan Vuylsteke, St. Joseph’s Project SEARCH business liaison. “The goal is ultimately for them to find competitive employment.”

Each intern completes three 10-week internships to explore career options and develop job skills. Hutton House provides employment planning and support, while an instructor and skills trainer from the Thames Valley District School Board assist students at Parkwood Institute.

During her internships, Meghan worked closely with veterans in St. Joseph’s Veterans Care Program. She escorted them to appointments, assisted with activities, and spent quality time visiting them.

Her journey continues as she recently applied, interviewed, and secured a part-time position as a resident support aide in the Veterans Care Program.

“I feel very happy for the opportunities,” says Meghan.

Sandy Jansen, Vice President of Patient Care and Risk Management adds, "We are committed to fostering inclusive environments and celebrating the achievements of individuals like Meghan. Her journey exemplifies the impact of determination, opportunity and support."
